Flat website design

Recently I’ve noticed a growing trend in flat website design.

Flat website design is website design without the use of gradients, textures and drop shadows that have been popular in recent years to achieve what appears to be a flat surface.

I first noticed the trend least year in logo design.  Companies were ditching their logos with reflections and shadows in favour of a more simplistic flat design.Old Facebook logoNew Facebook logoOld Microsoft logoNew Microsoft logo

The new gov.uk website has done this brilliantly. It is a clean, clear easy to navigate site which is impressive, especially considering the amount of information, politics, legacy systems and bureaucracy it will have had to overcome.

The new Microsoft website also has a flat design, following the lead of its logo.

Which do you prefer, flat websites or ones with shadows and textures?
